Anthracnose

Anthracnose is a fungal disease that affects pomegranates and is caused by species of the Colletotrichum fungus. Symptoms include: 

  • Leaves: Small circular spots with yellow halos, which can eventually cause the leaves to turn chlorotic and fall off 
  • Fruit: Brown lesions that can progress through the rind and arils, causing the fruit to decay. The lesions may be sunken and irregularly shaped, and can be surrounded by gray to orange spore masses 
  • Other: Shoot blight, twig cankers, and dieback 

Anthracnose is more severe in humid conditions with temperatures between 20-27ºC, such as in subtropical environments. In these conditions, the disease can cause up to 100% fruit loss. 

To control anthracnose, you can spray the pomegranate with fungicides such as: Mancozeb, Propineb, Carbendazim, and Azoxystrobin. 

You can also use biocontrol agents such as Aspergillus flavus, Hypocrea rufa, Hyponectria tuberculariformis, and Nectriella muelleri.
